Setting Your Rate as a MarTech Consultant
One of the hardest parts of freelancing in Marketing Operations is pricing. Charge too little, and clients assume you are inexperienced. Charge too much, and you lose the bid.
The "Generalist" era is over. In 2026, rates are dictated by Platform Specialization and Technical Depth. A general "Digital Marketer" might cap out at $85/hr, whereas a "Salesforce Marketing Cloud Architect" often starts at $185/hr.
Hourly vs. Retainer vs. Project
Hourly
Best for ad-hoc troubleshooting or "Emergency" fixes. Charge your highest premium here.
Retainer
Best for stability. Offer a 10-15% discount in exchange for a guaranteed 6-month contract.
Project
Value-based pricing. E.g., "Migration to HubSpot" is a flat $15k fee, regardless of hours.
The "Technical Premium"
If you can write code (SQL, Python, JavaScript) or manage APIs, you are no longer just a marketer; you are a Marketing Engineer. This distinction typically justifies a 30% to 50% rate increase over standard operational roles.
