How to Interview MarTech Candidates
Hiring for Marketing Operations is notoriously difficult because resumes often look identical. A candidate might list "Marketo" as a skill, but do they know how to build a scalable scoring model, or did they just send email blasts?
Effective interviews must move beyond "trivia" questions. Asking "Where is the admin menu?" proves nothing. Instead, focus on Scenario-Based Questions that reveal problem-solving skills.
3 Categories of Questions
- Architectural: "How would you structure our lead lifecycle if we have both B2B and B2C product lines?"
- Troubleshooting: "Sales is complaining that leads aren't syncing to Salesforce. Walk me through how you debug this."
- Business Impact: "Describe a time you used data to change a marketing strategy."
Common Interview Pitfalls
The biggest mistake hiring managers make is over-indexing on a specific tool. Tools change. If a candidate is a Salesforce Marketing Cloud expert, they can likely learn Braze quickly. Look for aptitude and data literacy over simple tool proficiency.
