What are UTM Parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are simple tags that you add to the end of a URL. When a user clicks that URL, the tags are sent back to your analytics platform (like Google Analytics 4, HubSpot, or Adobe Analytics) to tell you exactly where that user came from.

Without UTMs, your analytics will likely dump a significant portion of your traffic into the dreaded "Direct" bucket, making it impossible to prove the ROI of your email, social, or paid ad campaigns.

The 5 Standard UTM Tags

  • utm_source: The referrer (e.g., google, newsletter, linkedin).
  • utm_medium: The marketing medium (e.g., cpc, email, social).
  • utm_campaign: The specific campaign name (e.g., summer_sale, webinar_launch).
  • utm_term: (Optional) Identify paid search keywords.
  • utm_content: (Optional) Differentiate links that point to the same URL (e.g., header_link vs footer_link).

Best Practices for Campaign Tagging

Data hygiene is critical in Marketing Operations. Inconsistent tagging is the #1 reason for broken attribution reports.

  1. Use Lowercase Only: Analytics tools are often case-sensitive. Email and email will show up as two different rows. Stick to lowercase to avoid fragmentation.
  2. Use Underscores, Not Spaces: Spaces in URLs become %20, which looks messy and can break tracking scripts. Use summer_sale instead of summer sale.
  3. Be Consistent: Don't switch between facebook and facebook-ads. Pick a taxonomy and stick to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

No, Google ignores UTM parameters when crawling your site for ranking purposes. However, it is best practice to use a canonical tag on your page to ensure the "clean" URL is the one indexed.

Can I use UTMs on internal links?

Never use UTMs on internal links. Doing so overwrites the original session source. For example, if a user comes from Google, and then clicks an internal banner with UTMs, their session will reset, and the credit for the sale will go to the internal banner instead of Google.

Will this work with GA4?

Yes, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) uses the exact same standard UTM parameters as Universal Analytics.
